Necessary Accessories: Brows 101

When you think of style, what usually comes to mind? Putting together a nice outfit, matching your purse or murse (man purse) with the correct coloured shoes, possibly adding a stylish cut to your current tresses? But did you know that your eyebrows, those lovely little arches just above your eyes also need to be stylized? I first came across the importance of groomed brows after I had a facial and the esthetician decided to pluck a few hairs just because. As a result, my eyes and face looked really different and better. So I haven’t looked back since. If you’re anything like me then, you’ll really appreciate my next 5 suggestions for places to get the best brow-shape Vancouver has to offer.

1. Bombay Brow Bar

Yaletown’s newest browshape-only spotis run by two sisters who are passionate about brows. The spa offers hands on, relaxing brow threading and tweezing and even throws in a cup-of-Chai for good measure. The treatment is only $23 without tax and tip. South Asian videos and music is looped on the iPod to keep the energy high and flirty.

2. Beverly’s on 4th Day Spa

If you’re ever in Kitsilano, you need to stop by here and get them to work on those browse.

3. Absolute Spa at the Century

Absolute Spa is famous for hosting celebrities. On the higher end of price points for brows,($30) you’ll feel like a queen after you’re finished here. Their technicians are very experienced and will give you pointers to managing the upkeep of your brows, long after you’ve left the salon. A spa lunch and drinks are complimentary with each visit.

4. Hennessey Salon in Park Royal-Letho

Letho can make your brows grow back even when they don’t want to. Her technique uses wax and tweezing, and her work is phenomenal. Whenever I am in West Vancouver, I try to drop in and see her for a visit.

5. Sugarbox- Jane Brooks

Jane Brooks is an artist when it comes to hari removal in the most strategic of places. And that also includes eyebrows. For $20 or maybe less if you’re getting a Brazilian with her, she’ll tweeze those brows into shape like it’s nobody’s business.

Going Highbrow

‘Rock Your Brows. Indian Style.’ So goes the catchline at Yaletown’s new Bombay Brow Bar.

Brows are big business, especially in the Persian and Indian cultures, and eyebrow threading is an ancient method of hair removal that truly encompasses the ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ code. It’s quick and far less painful than plucking.

Bombay Brow Bar isn’t a spa per se, as all they do are brows, but the lush, exotic Indo-interior designs, plus the staff, are so pro that the owners have already been hit up regarding franchise opportunities. At this time, that’s not in the cards. Women (and lots of men I’m told) are loving the experience. For $23, and about twenty minutes of your time, you leave with groomed, expertly-shaped brows and a little reprieve from your everyday routine. Surrounded by a cheerful colour scheme of fuchsia and tangerine, you’re offered David Rio’s delicious Tiger Spice chai tea while Bollywood music videos thump, and your ‘Brow Sculptress’ gets to work.

After a consultation regarding the brow shape you prefer, the threading goes quickly, and you’re then treated to a soothing brow massage with rosewater gel, and a little makeup to finish the shape, if preferred.

Like any good beauty bar, appointments are appreciated, but drop-ins are just fine.
